Mailbag: Weird Prayers, Prayer Walks and What Would Jesus Pray

Brief Overview:

In this final episode in our month long series on prayer, Matt and Tal answer five of questions they are most frequently asked questions church leaders have about prayer:

Your Questions About Prayer:

  1. When is the best time to pray?

  2. What resources on prayer do you recommend the most?

  3. How do I fit everything in that I need to pray for?

  4. Any recommendations on corporate prayer meetings?

  5. What do we think of [approach to prayer that you don’t like]?

No Leader Has Ever Been Encouraged Too Much

Biggest Takeaways You Don't Want To Miss:

  • Words matter. Every leader needs to know they’re making a difference. You’re not crazy for wanting to hear particular words about how you make the world better.
  • Discouragement is deadly. Pay attention to the warning signs of discouragement. It’s one thing to have a bad day, but when every day is a bad day…
  • Developing courage is a project. Dive into the reasons you feel discouraged. And do the work to get your feet under you and be the leader God created you to be.

Let us help you build courage. Matt will help you take action.

It’s simply not enough to know that it’s important to lead with courage. You have to take what you know and put it into action. Let us help you take the awareness that you built by listening to this episode and take action.  Learn more here.

Pastor Duke Kwon on Small Steps Towards Cross-Cultural Community

Biggest Takeaways You Don't Want To Miss:

We live in the tension between God’s ‘already’ and ‘not yet.’ One day, the Church will live forever with God in the beauty of diversity. And while that day is not today, you and I can pray and dream and take small steps towards God’s preferred future.

Secret #11: How Healthy Churches Respond To Sexual Abuse Allegations

Biggest Takeaways You Don't Want To Miss:

Few challenges are greater in a church than a leader accused of sexual abuse or sexual assault. Churches consistently rush to conclusions rather than take appropriate measures to protect everyone and pursue justice. This episode provides a step-by-step plan for turning intention into reality.

Secret #10 - A Simple Way to Lose Fat and Live Longer

Biggest Takeaways You Don't Want To Miss:

From our perspective, the biggest hang up to walking is the perception that it’s not strenuous enough. Leaders are notorious for believing that the only way to achieve good results is to take the hardest path. Let me modify it for you - the best path is the smartest path, not necessarily that which is most treacherous. When it comes to walking, simple, slow and steady wins the race.

Jason Cook on Calling and Pastoring a Multi-Ethnic Church

Biggest Takeaways You Don't Want To Miss:

  • The Gospel and Race. Issues of racism (personal or systemic) or building communities that cross the lines of race are not incidental to the gospel. They are not implications. They are at the heart of the good news of Jesus.
  • The Role of Women in the Development of Pastors. Anyone training for vocational ministry in seminary needs both men and women to help develop the competence and character necessary to pastor well.
  • The Hard Road to Becoming a Multiethnic Church. The road to diversity is littered with well-meaning majority culture churches who hire a single person of color on their staff as the solution to their problems. Becoming a more diverse church will require patience and persistence.

Consider the cost. It is one thing to see the good news of God’s people. It’s another thing to develop the conviction that people are equal, regardless of the color of their skin. But living and leading in that direction will not happen without a cost. Be wise and get ready. The road is bumpy and the climb is steep.

Michael Wear on Church Politics and Hope in 2018

Biggest Takeaways You Don't Want To Miss:

  • You can’t hide from politics. Social media and a 24/7 news cycle make political news and opinion impossible to avoid. In a hyper-partisan political culture, no wonder we are exhausted and cynical.
  • Your vote is not an expression of your identity. For Christians, we vote as an act of loving our neighbor. Rather than focusing on single issues, we vote for the candidate whose policies will be most conducive to a biblical vision of human flourishing.
  • Find moments of possibility in your community. Churches influence policy, not by a preoccupation with national and international affairs. Instead, we pay attention to what God is already doing around us and point people to the hope that God is not done yet.

If you are politically active, this conversation will challenge long-held assumptions. And if you have avoided politics.

Biggest Takeaways You Don't Want To Miss:

  • How well do I know myself? The Enneagram is a self-diagnostic tool. Without a basic level of self-awareness, I leave myself open to blind spots in my choice of type.
  • How well do I handle complexity? While the Enneagram’s number system is simple to understand, it is a rather sophisticated tool. Some personality types thrive in exploration; others need results with fewer variables.
  • What do I hope to learn from the Enneagram? Because the Enneagram is multi-faceted, it is easy to find the answers you are looking for only to lose yourself as other avenues of exploration present themselves.

If the Enneagram is clicking for you, then go with it. Just remember, wisdom comes from a multitude of counselors. The best personality system for you is the one that works for you.

Still have questions? Use this to find the right system for you.

The Enneagram may or may not be right for you. Not all systems are created equal, and no single system is right for everyone. To find out which system is best for you, here’s a simple diagnostic tool you can use to quit guessing and make a fully informed decision.

Secret #5 - How To Drama-Proof Your Holidays, Workplace and Everyday Life

Biggest Takeaways You Don't Want To Miss:

  • Know your role. When conflict erupts, are you the perpetrator or victim? And if you aren’t directly part of the conflict, help the people involved to understand their roles.
  • Take a step forward. Both the victim and perpetrator need to clarify how old they feel during the conflict and take a physical step towards responsibility.
  • Decide on a better future. Once apologies have been made and tensions have de-escalated, brainstorm options together. Then negotiate and work with each other until you decide how to move forward.
